Hallmarking

A hallmark is a set of marks applied to articles of precious metals gold, silver, platinum and palladium. They prove that the item has been independently tested and meets the requirements of purity.

The Full Traditional Hallmark comprises five marks: Sponsor’s mark, traditional fineness mark, millesimal fineness mark, Assay Office mark and date letter mark.

 The Full Traditional Hallmark will tell you the where, what, when and who of a precious metal item from the following five marks:

Sponsor’s mark: 
This identifies who submitted the item for hallmarking. Lethbridge jewellery can be identified by the sponsor’s mark ‘LETH’

Traditional fitness mark:
This identifies whether the item is gold, silver, platinum and palladium.

Millesimal fitness mark:
This identifies the fitness of the metal - 9k, 14k 18k etc.

Assay Office Mark:
The mark of the Assay Office that carried out the Hallmarking. Lethbridge jewellery is hallmarked at the London Assay Office which can be identified by the leopards head.

Date Letter Mark:
Identifies the date in which the item was hallmarked.
